Charitable Donation Information

Shiva's Center for the Human-Animal Bond, Inc. is a not-for-profit, tax exempt charitable organization registered under section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Shiva's Center for the Human-Animal Bond was established to benefit companion animals of Santa Barbara County. The fund is designed to work with the California Animal Referral and Emergency (CARE) Hospital to support four main areas of concentration:

Shiva’s Center Goals:

  • To make pet loss and grief counseling services available, free of charge, to anyone in our community who is struggling with the loss (or anticipated loss) of their companion animal. Free Grief Counseling groups can be an important form of support for those grieving the loss of animal companionship and celebrating the gift of animals in their lives. For more information, please go to: http://www.shivascenter.org
  • To provide safe, emergency housing and medical services to lost, abandoned and/or injured domestic and wild animals within Santa Barbara County 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
    • Funding permitted, financial assistance may be provided to sick or injured companion animals thru The Shiva - CARE fund who need substantial veterinary care that is too costly for their owners to bear alone.
    • Wildlife may be brought to CARE Hospital when the Wildlife Care Network is closed, free of charge to the Good Samaritan, so that the animal may receive timely and appropriate treatment.
  • To educate the veterinary medical community as well as the community at large about the Human-Animal Bond.
    • Providing in-services to area veterinarians about how to talk to families and children about euthanasia and pet loss; memorializing our pets; delivering terminal diagnoses; as well as other important topics about promoting bond-centered veterinary practices.
    • Providing education to the public about pet loss, grieving companion animals, and the therapeutic benefits of pet companionship.
  • To promote specialty medical veterinary residency training programs to ensure that state-of-the-art medical care remains available for animals within the Santa Barbara community.
    • Our community was without specialty veterinary medicine until 2003. By sponsoring residents in veterinary medicine (currently only Emergency and Critical Care) our community will be better suited to attract and retain specialists in our area.
    • Donations are also welcome to obtain state-of-the-art equipment so that our specialists can keep up with cutting edge procedures (for example, MRI, CT Scan, etc). The goal is to prevent the need for our pet companions & their guardians to have to travel to surrounding counties for treatment (especially when they are injured or ill).

The Shiva - CARE Fund

We firmly believe that a guardians commitment to care for their sick companions should not be limited by financial status. Shiva's Center for the Human-Animal Bond and California Animal Referral and Emergency (CARE) Hospital have teamed together to establish The Shiva - CARE Fund. The Shiva - CARE Fund may assist residents of Santa Barbara County who are suffering difficult financial times when their pets need specialized care. Donations may be utilized to assist qualified companion animals in need of medical and surgical treatment to be performed at California Animal Referral and Emergency Hospital.

Donating in Memory of a Beloved Family Member

The loss of a pet can have a significant impact on you and your family. Companion animals give us support, love, and loyalty that can be hard to find elsewhere. CARE Hospital understands that losing a family pet can be one of the most difficult times in your life. Any donation that you make can be designated for any of the programs within Shiva's Center. We would be honored to have you make a donation in memory of your beloved family member.
